Not sure I understand what you are seeing. Can you post a screenshot?

Could it be an indicator that you have a voicemail message?

Sure looks like a voicemail message indicator. Have you called to check?

Steve, he has. Since he never used it before, when he dialed voicemail, he had to first set it up. As he just set it up, there were no voicemails. Doesn't have a Google voicemail account, so that was ruled out as well.

Not rooted, running stock. Have a call in to my friend who is a developer. Waiting on his reply.

Could it be a missed call?

    Audio MMS?

Alkali, since you are so sure of what it is not, have you contacted your carrier to see if they can explain it?

Alkali, have you ever looked at or tried Visual Voice Mail? If it is on your phone, try opening it and when prompted if you want to set it up respond no and see if the message goes away.

What carrier do you have your cell service with?

Contact MTN and ask them to clear the voicemail counter.

You can try clearing the phone cache, but if it is an error at the carrier level the notification may temporarily disappear, but return...
Settings > Applications > Manage > All tab > Phone > Select the Clear data box.

If the icon returns go back to the same screen and select Force Stop instead of Clear data. Then pull the battery, count to 20 replace the battery and see if it cleared after the phone reboots.
