Yea def need the drivers, connecting via usb and seeing the phone isn't what you need for this particular case

okay I thought I got it to work? but used a root checker and it says device does not have
    proper root access

Okay I get mixed results so not sure if I am rooted on my Huawei M920 or not.

I was able to clear the cache(so that needed root)

Try to install a program that requires root; Titanium Backup or Root Explorer and see if it runs

    okay
can not get titanium backup to work, says can't acquire root rights .

But I am able to run/install the following that require root access:

    cache mate
    apps2rom
    memory optimizer
    root browser lite

unless these don't really need root access to work?

Sounds like it didnt work right, the root access that is.
If 1 works they should all work.

I am thinking that, then again not sure if it did or did not work.

Because the fact that some of the apps(which require root) did work, such as the
    Root Browser Lite

    Just saying

If it worked, then all root apps would work. Super User wouldn't crash when opening it...I don't think it went right.

I hear you. But you know how crazy computers/cell phone are, they don't always work how we want.

I guess I could always try it again?

the whole adb devices then adb reboot recovery

    and see what happens?

    any other ideas?

    Stick with ADB
When you type adb devices does a long number come up? If so then you are going in the right direction

i just did it now, adb devices and
    what comes up is:
    List of devices attached:
    M920 device

    that is all

Ok that means your devices is found by ADB, the drivers are properly installed and can be contacted through the SDK
Keep going...you are on the right path, just keep following the instructions exactly. Redownload files for the root if you have to.

so now say I do the adb devices command
    it shows the m920 device
    but not the long #'s

okay here is a question: when I perform these commands >
4.Run 'adb devices' and make sure your device is there, it should say M920

    5. If its there then reboot with recovery. 'adb reboot recovery'

    6. Once booted into recovery then use the volume up and down buttons to scroll up and down and to select press camera button and then press power button. (Not at the same time :p)

    7. Choose update from SD Card.

    8. Choose the update.zip from the root of your drive.

    9. After its done then reboot your phone and its rooted

should my phones sd card be mounted via usb and in debug mode or ?

maybe??? it is something to do with the Android version I am currently running/have on the phone.
    2.3.6 version

I tried the adb devices and then the adb reboot recovery and still got the same result.

Connect phone to PC with USB cable and have Debugging on
Also make sure its not in any sort of MTL mode when you connect it, in the pull down menu on the phone make sure it doesnt say Media or anything..if so...click the box and make it something else...like Camera connection

okay I only have debugging on, but connected my cell via usb. Not mounting the SDcard either

I did the adb devices and got the same result:
    List Of Devices Attached:
    M920 Device

but I will still attempt it

well doing it now and waiting on result
did not work, when I go to the app superuser
    it says "Sorry"
The application Superuser(process com.noshufou.android.su) has stopped unexpectly please
    try again

So something is going on with my process of doing adb devices adb reboot recovery and then rebooting into recovery mode and doing the update from sdcard update.zip
